The modern American jezebel and Incel Language:

Introduction: material too nasty for a dissertation

 This post exists as a repository of screenshots to support a small point in my dissertation.  Within the context of the dissertation, I am trying to establish what the modern American jezebel is, in order to set up a contrast between this jezebel and the late ancient uses of Jezebel. The subpoint, which this post supports with primary evidence from Reddit, is that the modern American jezebel, as circulating in some internet spaces, is infused with Incel-talking points. I will make that part of that argument for you below. But first a few words of caution.

I have mentioned incels a few times on this blog before (here), and given the extreme nature of the language they use under cover of anonymity, it might be easy to write them off as a small and extreme subset of the world’s population. It is very difficult to get precise data on who identifies as an incel both due to the nature of the Internet and due to the fact that their main forums for congregation (e.g. 4chan, 8chan) keep getting shut down and Reddit is playing whack-a-mole with their subreddits. However, all attempts at measuring their community suggest that 1) the movement is large, 2) that it is growing, and 3) that it is responsible both for everyday violence against women and terrorist behavior.[1]

 This material could not be included directly in the dissertation for a few reasons. First, this is only a very small point, and supporting that point would require way more space than it deserves. Second, the nature of the evidence is violent, graphic, and deeply unsettling – significantly more so than even my most violent and repulsive late ancient evidence. It would take a PG-13 dissertation and make it R-rated or, in some cases, straight up pornographic. No thanks! Initially, the connection between jezebel and Incel Language was one I made through intuition, but I have tried to break down the definition of jezebel into 10 points (a-j), each with screenshots from Incels writing about the same or similar issues using the same or similar language. All of my examples come from r/IncelTears unless otherwise noted (“a community dedicated to documenting and discussing the hateful, misogynistic, racist, violent, and often absurd ideas found in incel spaces.”)

jezebel is not especially common vocabulary among Incels, though they do sometimes call women jezebels or address the jezebel spirit, as in the example below:

Now, the definition of jezebel that caught my attention was on Urban Dictionary, posted by a user with a feminine-coded name, Maria Paquita, in 2020. It reads:

“She” adds the example: “Jezebel set out to destroy a marriage.”[3] Now, this is unlikely this author is really a woman, and Incels often write as women on the internet. [3] The tells as that “she” refers to women as “it” (see a, our first Incel marker below) and says that jezebel women devalue things that “you” like. And here are the points the definition makes, which I will address, in order, below:

1. However, referring to women as “it”
2. women using sex for control
3. controlling men’s dress/domestication
4. obsession with eunuchs/castration
5. degrading things people (read: men) like
6. women as incestuous
7. women as serial cheaters
8. women as family destroyers/ruiners of young boys
9. against “Christian values”
10. fear of witchcraft

I also include a bonus section on women as whores, which if you have been on the Internet ever you don’t really need but there were just some real gems out there I had to scoop up. Of course, please feel free to skip to the points that are of most interest to you – this post does not build the argument slowly but takes the parts of this jezebel definition point-by-point.

jezebel and Incel Language

1. Referring to a woman as “it”

Conclusions:

Let us return to the original definition of jezebel, on Urban Dictionary:

uses Sex to control, Dresses it’s men in the same clothing and facial hair.( eunuch uniform), Has its Child learn no manly attributes, to maintain control of it, Devalues and degrades all things you like, Sleeps with siblings partners and cheats, Seeks total control, Discredits Christian values, unless they line up with its perversion, Avails of witchcraft. [4]

I hope the relationship between the parts of this definition, and Incel language/talking points is now clear. Though jezebel is hardly a current priority of the Incel-community, which has largely developed its own anti-feminist vocabulary, these manosphere talking-points are affecting modern American discourse on jezebel.
